The project was one of the first major inter-coastal waterfront revitalization projects for the city of Buffalo, where private development monies were used to bring new commerce to a rapidly changing and revamped city economy. It’s an example of one of SunLife’s many public-private partnerships. Working together with the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation, it was part of the Governor of New York’s vision for establishing the new, first-class, 200-acre Buffalo Harbor State Park and improving the Outer Harbor.

Renovations at the marina were of epic proportions, keeping with Safe Harbor and Sun Life’s brand:Â
- $11 million in capital improvements
- Upgraded to a 1,055-slip marina
- New slip layout and redesign to accommodate popular boat sizes
- New state-of-the-art docking system (photo, top right)
- Updated electrical, water service and lighting
- Addition of an administration building for onsite operations, management, and boater services offices

The project also included a reimagined and totally renovated 8,000-square-foot full-service restaurant into the nautical-themed Charlie’s Boat Yard, serving seafood and American fare, including appetizers and entrees during the boating season.
