Jim Mooney Jr. Named SBOA President

The Storage Business Owners Alliance (SBOA) has a new president! According to a letter from SBOA Founder Ian Burnstein, Jim Mooney Jr. is stepping into the role effective immediately. Read the full letter below to learn more about the organization, its mission and what qualifications made Mooney the perfect choice for the presidency position.

“Since 2009, the Storage Business Owners Alliance (SBOA) has stayed true to its founding mission: created by operators, for operators. Our purpose is to equip the self-storage community with practical, high-value solutions—whether through exclusive vendor discounts, consulting and advisory services, education, networking, or collaborative product development. Every initiative we take is aimed at helping you operate more efficiently and profitably.

Today, we are pleased to share an exciting leadership update. Jim Mooney Jr. has joined the SBOA as our new President.

“Jim is widely regarded as one of the industry’s most forward-thinking operational leaders. With more than 25 years of experience, he has spent his career creating real solutions for real operators. Jim served as Vice President of Operations for two major organizations, overseeing more than 80 locations and pioneering the Hub-and-Spoke management model—an approach that has since influenced operational strategy across the industry.

“His leadership is grounded in practical innovation, and his ability to turn day-to-day challenges into scalable operational improvements has made him a respected voice within the self-storage community.

Jim also brings a strong history of industry service. He is the Past President of the Pennsylvania Self Storage Association (PASSA) and has served on its board for nine years. He previously sat on the board of the Maryland Self Storage Association (MDSSA). In addition, he is a frequent speaker, moderator and panelist at national events and a regular contributor to leading publications, offering insights on operations, employee engagement, and emerging trends.

“My co-CEO, Kathy Wallace Wee, and I want to extend our sincere gratitude to Iris for her hard work and dedication over the last year. We wish her every success in her future endeavors. And we thank you in advance for supporting Jim as he steps into this important role.” The letter is signed by Burnstein and thanks members of the alliance for their support of SBOA.
