Noké Smart Entry: No Key, No Problem

An Industry Spotlight

Millions of Americans have decided to enjoy the recreational lifestyle this summer. They’ve likely begun the exciting, and sometimes tedious, planning phase, with several remote and adventurous destinations in mind. While on the road, securing their recreational vehicle is their responsibility.

Overall, auto break-in thefts have drastically increased since the peak of the global pandemic, with over a 10.9 percent increase in the United States. Vehicles stored within your perimeter fence are reasonably safe. However, as an RV and boat storage facility owner, are you doing all that you can to help owners protect their vehicles when stored at your facility for the majority of the year?

It may be in your best interest to give Noké a call and check out what the Noké Smart Entry system can do for you! This smart-technology-driven company was founded in 2014 and has been offering high-quality security solutions for a wide array of consumers across the globe.

The Noké team is constantly innovating to produce first-class control security solutions in an ever-changing world. Whether it be heavy-duty padlocks, wall-mounted door controls, or even a custom lock fit for just your needs, this industry award-winning company has the equipment and expertise that will best fit your needs for an enjoyable and truly safe adventure.

Recently, Toy Storage Nation had the pleasure of chatting with John Bilton, the Regional Sales Manager (Western Region) of Noké Smart Entry to find out more about their technology solutions. Below is our conversation.

TSN: What exactly are keyless locks and how would you best compare them to traditional key lock management?

JB: They are no longer manual, no physical key is needed, no lost keys, no copied keys in circulation. This is a digital key; thus, the tenant controls the use of the digital key, who uses it, when it is used, and for what period. Lock management becomes digital as well, thus overlocking and the release of the overlock do not require a person to touch the door. This is now electronic and automatic based upon your delinquency schedule. No missed overlocks, release at all hours and instantly when a payment is made. Data is thus also collected for making decisions on the property.

TSN: RV owners desire a worry-free experience at storage facilities with no to low cases of theft or damages. In which ways does Noke extend this experience to the RV owners?

JB: For enclosed RV, the roll-up door, and gate experience operation can be automatic. Thus, the tenant does not need to leave their RV o open a gate or their roll-up door. This is done with their smartphone and a push of an icon on the smartphone. Security is also increased because part of the Noke system has a thermal sensor looking into the unit. This thermal sensor knows when there is an authorized entry and a non-authorized entry. When a non-authorized entry occurs, a notification is sent to eh owner-operator 24/7 for an immediate response. Plus, all Noke locks look alike, and thus a criminal cannot distinguish between an occupied or unoccupied unit.

TSN: To what extent would you say having keyless locks on RV storage facilities increase demand for services? How likely would RV owners be willing to pay a premium fee to use Noke Bluetooth smart padlocks on their vehicles?

JB: With Noke Smart Entry the tenant controls the access to their unit. They have an activity log of all entries and exits of the unit. The tenant can also digital key share their unit, when this is done the tenant can see when that digital key share person enters their unit and locks and leaves their unit. Control is important to the tenant and the owner-operator. The Noke HD Padlock on a vehicle is also available to be controlled through a digital key assignment and adds the convenience of no keys to manage or lose. Tenants are paying additional technology fees and higher rental rates for digital lock control.

TSN: Having top-notch security is one of the primary concerns that RV storage facility operators and RV owners have. However, many solutions that are currently out in the market today have a learning curve or are out of line with the facility’s operations. How can you ensure that you’ve developed products and solutions that are easy to use and efficient for a variety of users?

JB: If you can use a smartphone, you can use Noke. if you do not have a smartphone the site can issue a Bluetooth key fob that will digitally unlock the locks. Janus has done a poll of current users, please see attached datasheet for ease-of-use data.

TSN: How do you ensure data security when clients share their data on your platforms, i.e. the mobile app and the web portal?

JB: The Noke Smart Entry application does not hold any personal data, no credit card data, no name, and address data, or no social security numbers. That data is held by the Property Management Software. not Noke. With that said Noke does an annual threat assessment to make sure our application is not hacked or compromised at any time.

TSN: As a company that has been in business for the last few years, you’ve definitely come up with ways to address the different queries and comments over on customer support. What steps do you take in the event of product malfunction, or other service-based issues that may arise?

JB: Noke has a two-year warranty for parts and if necessary, labor. We also provide as part of the product purchase 24/7 technical support via phone and email. We have employees online 24/7 to answer questions. Janus/Noke has 12 domestic offices and has employees in all those offices.

TSN: Comment on the durability and reliability of the Bluetooth smart padlocks. How durable are the padlocks after being subjected to adverse weather effects?

JB: Noke has been deployed on sites for over four years now. We have Noke One devices deployed in Canada on outdoor south-facing drive-up units for several winters. We test our product in heat chambers and freeze chambers, the products have proven to be very robust.

TSN: How popular is the digital key sharing feature so far? What sort of feedback are you receiving from your earliest customers?

JB: Very popular, some sites have as many digital key shares as tenants. Tenants love this feature. The owner-operator loves it as well because they know who is on property. A person’s name, phone number, and email address are captured and can be marketed to as a new potential tenant who has likely had an experience on property already.

TSN: In the unlikely event that a client left their vehicle locked using Noke products for an extended period of time and the battery of the lock runs out, what steps can they take to reopen the lock?

JB: The HD Padlock can be jump-started with a regular 9 Volt battery.

TSN: Many RV storage facility owners operating an unattended facility invest in keyless smart access to control their gates. In which ways does Noke integrate with other electronic solutions to ease operations?

JB: Noke is a full access control system and operates the gates, elevators, man doors, or slider doors.
