Friday, April 14, was a long day for Toy Storage Nation’s Executive Workshop attendees at Caesars Forum in Las Vegas – a long day to mingle with RV and boat storage pioneers as well as other attendees while learning just about everything to develop and manage a successful facility. Although the day was long, attendees were more than happy to spend every minute of it taking in extremely important information and brilliant ideas from the group of RV and boat storage veterans willing to share their best ideas and most valuable experience in this fast-tracking industry.
The morning opened with breakfast and the delivery of a powerful presentation by Chris Koenig of Kingsland Companies who spelled out security and technology applications for operating a facility. This presentation was followed by Matt Maurer of Betco, who gave his best advice for incorporating enclosed construction in site design.
Following Matt, attendees were actively engaged on a field trip to a nearby facility–at Love’s RV and Boat Storage–where the facility operator, along with contractor Bob Hayworth of Baja Carports, pointed out key features of a well-designed facility that features solar canopies engineered to offset energy-consumption costs.
During a bountiful buffet lunch, Terry Anderson, who serves as chair of TSN’s executive board of directors, introduced attendees to ancillary services that can help improve the facility’s ability to attract tenants from the moment its doors open for business.
Transitioning to afternoon sessions, Jo Beth White of Development Services Inc. shared tips on conducting feasibility studies to ensure proper facility location; Greg Ellsworth of Self-Storage Consulting Group provided details for development and operations; Bishesh Shrestha of Live Oak Bank spoke about financing strategies; Steve Lucas of The Storage Group outlined marketing strategies; and Yardi’s Jeff Bailey explained best approaches for selecting software to effectively manage your properties.
The day was capped off by a scintillating legal update from the industry-revered attorney, Jeff Greenberger; along with closing comments made by Theresa Chareunsab of RecNation RV and Boat Storage. The education sessions concluded with a panel of experts fielding questions from attendees. Lastly, everyone wound down with a cocktail party, during which they could bounce around the room and have one-on-one conversations with attendees and industry experts.
